Is the app compatible with all smartphones?

No. The app doesn’t work on certain phones. For example, some older models do not support the required software features or NFC technology for the app to work properly for purchasing fares and adding them to an OPUS card.
Note: The minimum operating systems are version 6 for Android and version 14 for iOS, and the phone must be NFC compatible.
What is NFC technology?

Near-field communication (NFC) is the technology that allows data to be transmitted between two devices in close proximity, quickly and without any equipment to set up.
For RTC Recharge OPUS, NFC allows you to transmit your OPUS card data to your smartphone.
The technology is becoming more and more common, and most smartphones have it.
How do I activate NFC on my phone?

NFC is activated by default on iPhones (with the exception of iPhone 6 and earlier, which were developed without NFC). However, if you have a company phone, your employer may have blocked the NFC function.
On an Android phone, go to your device settings. Use the search bar at the top of the screen to search for NFC, then activate it.
Will the app work with an NFC-enabled tablet?

No. The app was designed specifically for smartphones. It cannot be used on a tablet.
Are there any security or theft issues related to the use of NFC technology?

No. NFC technology is widely used in the banking industry and has a proven track record of security and reliability. Security features are regularly updated, so you know you always have the best possible protection.
Rest assured that NFC technology doesn’t transmit any personal information to the mobile app.

How the app works, and how to use it

Which types of fares are available?
Most of the transit fares in our fare schedule are available for purchase with the RTC Recharge OPUS app.
The exceptions are:
School passes under an agreement with a school partner: University Student Pass (LPU), Semester Pass, and School Pass
Fares only available with the Occasional card: Unlimited weekend, 1-day pass, and bundles of 20 Metropolitan tickets.
What types of cards can be checked or reloaded with the RTC Recharge OPUS mobile app?

Occasional (disposable) smart cards can only be checked (read) with the mobile app, but OPUS cards can be checked and reloaded.
Can I use the app to see the fare balance left on my OPUS card, without making a purchase?

Yes. You can see the card expiry date, the status and expiry date of your monthly or weekly fares, and the balance of your single or short-period fares. Once you’ve finished viewing what’s on your card, simply close the feature and return to the home page.
Do I have to scan my OPUS card every time I want to know my balance or make a purchase? Or is the information automatically updated in the app?

You must scan your OPUS card each time you want to know your balance or make a purchase. The app doesn’t store any information about the content of your OPUS card.
What payment methods can I use to buy fares with RTC Recharge OPUS?

Canadian and foreign Visa and Mastercard credit cards (including prepaid cards) are accepted. You can also pay using the banking information already saved in your Google Pay or Apple Pay wallet.
Is it safe to save my credit card in the RTC Recharge OPUS app? Is my payment information secure?

Absolutely. Protecting your data is a priority for us. The RTC Recharge OPUS app is subject to PCI standards (strict banking standards). That means the app will never have direct access to your banking information.

General questions

Can I add my OPUS card to my Apple or Android wallet? Does the app allow for a virtual OPUS card rather than a physical plastic one?

No, you cannot add your OPUS card to your digital wallet as you would with a credit card, for example. The app is only designed to reload a physical OPUS card. 
What is the advantage of using RTC Recharge OPUS compared to the RTC Nomade paiement app?

With RTC Recharge OPUS, you can reload your OPUS card from the comfort of home, using your own Wi-Fi. When you’re at a stop, you don’t need data to activate your fare, as is the case with the RTC Nomade paiement app. If you don’t have mobile data on your phone, we recommend RTC Recharge OPUS. With RTC Nomade paiement, you cannot use your fares if your phone runs out of battery.
RTC Recharge OPUS allows you to load all the cards you want (for your spouse, children, friends) using the same app, from the same phone.
The RTC Recharge OPUS app also allows you to save your credit card, for faster processing with every purchase. This feature is not available in RTC Nomade paiement.
And if you’re a Metropolitan customer, you can only obtain your monthly Metropolitan pass with the RTC Recharge OPUS app.
Are you planning to discontinue the RTC Nomade paiement app?

No. The RTC Recharge OPUS app is in addition to the options already in place (RTC Nomade paiement, points of sale, and L’abonne BUS programs) for buying fares without having to make a special trip.
